Probiotics - Good for your Belly!

Probiotics have become a hot item in recent years, as this article in the Wall Street Journal describes.  The term “probiotic” refers to any product that contains live and active bacterial or yeast cultures.  The World Health Organization uses this definition:  “live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”  These are the “good guys” that occur naturally in our bodies, and are sometimes wiped out by antibiotics or other illness.  We have had good success in improving antibiotic-associated diarrhea and diarrhea caused by common viral infections with the use of probiotic supplements.  These are available over-the-counter; many brands are available, and they come as powders, capsules, liquids and granules.  The WSJ article describes specific brands that have published data to back up their claims of effectiveness.  Some local pharmacies and many health food stores carry them.  The Walgreen’s pharmacies here at Medical City Dallas carry several brands, and you can find other varieties at Whole Foods or Central Market.  Pharmaceutical-grade products that we recommend include Florastor Kids, Flora Q, Culturelle, and Lactinex.  Liquid yogurt drinks that are locally available include Danactive Immunity, GoodBelly and Bio K Plus.  Call to discuss the specifics as to whether a probiotic can help your child.
