Last summer, I took the kids out to East Texas for a little day trip, where we picked our own blueberries at Blueberry Hill Farms. You can pick as many blueberries as you want, and the prices are far cheaper than what you pay in the store. Blueberries can be washed and frozen, too, so you can stock up the freezer. Walt enjoyed eating approximately 2 blueberries for every 1 that he put in his basket. I think it is important for children to learn where food comes from, so this is a nice introduction to the farm. Lastly, it is a nice excuse to have lunch in the town of Edom. On the main street, you can chose from The Shed Cafe, a classic in those parts, or the Edom Bakery and Grill across the street. Either way, you will find some tasty home cookin', and probably some blueberry pie for dessert. I would recommend that you get an early start, because it gets hot for the little ones in the blueberry field. Take sunscreen, hats, and a cooler to keep your pickings fresh on the way home. The blueberry season runs from now until mid-July -- check the website for specifics. There are many other pick-your-own farms around Texas, so look here or here for other fun farm-to-table ideas.
