The American Academy of Pediatrics released a report today detailing the range of normal behavior for kids regarding nudity and sexuality. Overall, this is a helpful and reassuring guide for parents and pediatricians who have to sort out what is normal vs. concerning behavior. The good news is that most childhood explorations are very innocent and harmless, but it does help to be cognizant of behaviors that could indicate a more serious problem. The AAP states, “If the behavior is intrusive, hurtful, and/or age-inappropriate, a more comprehensive assessment is warranted.” This article in the Washington Post summarizes the report nicely, and the original report includes this table describing the range of normal, common behaviors to those which are rarely normal and warrant further investigation.
